English

At Dover Park Primary School, we believe that the ability to write neatly with confidence and accuracy is an essential life skill. Writing is a complex process that draws upon more than handwriting and spelling; it is the ability to effectively communicate ideas, information, and opinions through the printed word in a wide range of contexts.

Writing Intent

  • Communication and Purpose: We aim for successful writers to understand the social function of writing, using different genres appropriately and matching them to a specific audience and purpose.

  • Technical Accuracy: Our curriculum requires children to understand and accurately apply the conventions of syntax, spelling, and punctuation.

  • Cross-Curricular Skills: We aim to equip children with the skills necessary to achieve high-quality writing throughout the entire curriculum.

Reading Intent

  • Fluency and Progress: Our aim is for every child to become a fluent reader, reaching age-related expectations or making accelerated progress from their individual starting points.

  • Reading for Pleasure: We strive to foster a genuine love for reading, encouraging children to read for pleasure on a regular basis.

  • Inclusive Acquisition of Knowledge: Reading education is fully inclusive; we develop pupils’ reading in all subjects to support their acquisition of knowledge and their understanding of extended prose (both fiction and non-fiction).

  • Ambitious Expectations: We promote wider reading by providing excellent library facilities and setting ambitious expectations for reading at home, in line with the National Curriculum.
