Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills) is a non-ministerial government department in the UK responsible for inspecting and regulating services related to education, children’s services, and skills development.
It ensures that educational institutions, such as schools, colleges, and early years settings, meet established standards of quality and effectiveness.
Ofsted conducts inspections, publishes reports, and provides guidance to promote improvement and accountability in education and childcare.
The agency’s key focus areas include safeguarding, curriculum quality, teaching standards, and leadership effectiveness.
Outcomes
National Curriculum Assessments
Primary school pupils in England take part in the following statutory National Curriculum assessments:
- Reception Baseline Assessment: within the first 6 weeks of entering Reception
- Early Years Foundation Stage profile assessment: between April and June of the academic year in which they turn 5 (usually the Reception year)
- Phonics Screening Check: in June of Year 1
- Multiplication Tables check: in June of Year 4
- Key Stage 2 tests (sometimes referred to as SATs): in May of Year 6.

End of Key Stage 2 Outcomes 2024/2025
The following percentage of Year 6 pupils achieved the age-related Expected Standard or above in Key Stage 2 assessments in 2024/2025:
Reading = 80% (National = 75%)
Writing = 80% (National = 72%)
Maths = 86.7% (National = 74%)
Reading, Writing and Maths combined = 73.3% (National=62%)
